Different Rules Can Create Conflict and Prevent Resolution

When Cindy and I were newlyweds - nearly 31 years ago, we ran headlong into the topic of today’s message.  We, like all married couples have those occasional spats, flair-ups, disagreements, and even an all-out-drag-out brawl every so often.  Fortunately as the years have passed, wisdom has been gained, maturity has increased, so the frequency and intensity of those conflicts have decreased - YEA!
 
However, in those early days, when we would ‘get into it’ Cindy would always speak her mind quite loudly and emotional, pretty much not want any part of hearing from me, then she would promptly walkout of the room and disappear — to cool off (or perhaps celebrate her victory!).  Her upbringing in a home with a Dad who was a Marine Drill Instructor, Southern Baptist, and born and bred Texan (do you get that visual) dictated this style of responding to conflict.
 
Me on the other hand, grew up in a home where conflict was handled by letting the emotional release happen, then calming the parties down and staying with it until you talked through the problem and resolved the issue, or at least generally in a civil manner you agreed to disagree.  Walking out on the other person in the middle of the conflict was totally unacceptable and viewed as incredibly rude and inappropriate.
 
Do you suppose Cindy and I had some challenges in resolving conflict given our very different styles of responding?  Yikes - quite the mess for a while - until we figured out that we had been lovingly programmed by our respective folks on how to respond and handle conflict in almost 180 degree ways from one another.  Once we recognized the power of our conflicting rules, then we could change the rules to ones that we both supported and could operate with (Cindy was always right! - only half kidding).
 
So, my question to you, what relationships, communications, and/or conflict in your business and personal life have friction, stress and seemingly always are difficult to find peace, harmony and resolution?
