A friend of mine likes to share the story of the time his family was traveling from Los Angeles to Australia.  The airlines made one of those infamous plane changes that had a different seating configuration than what everyone’s reservation had been based on.  So, you can imagine the havoc and stress level at the ticket counter and then the gate when everyone’s seat assignment had been changed.
 
My friend who was traveling with his wife, 10 year old, 7 year old, and 6 month old baby discovered upon check in that all 5 of them were scattered all over the plane - none of them were sitting together.  After several fruitless, and high blood pressure efforts to resolve the seating nightmare, my friend angrily walked away from a seemingly heartless and non-caring gate agent with all 5 of them still sitting separately in the massive plane.  The best the gate agent was willing to do was advise my friend that there was nothing they could do, the airline rules didn’t permit them to force people to change seats to accommodate a family and perhaps you can get people to switch with you (can you imagine how many people in this game of dominoes would have to re-shuffle themselves to bring 5 scattered people together in one row?
 
About to burst some kind of internal gasket, my friend’s wife calmly (and with a smile) said simply, “don’t worry honey I will take care of the problem”.  Just her ‘no-problem - I’ll take care of what you couldn’t do’ attitude was enough to send even the most loving of husband’s over the edge.  Fortunately, my friend bit his tongue (quite the flesh wound I might add) and thought — well let’s just see what you can do.
 
Upon entering the plane during boarding, the wife came to the first seat assigned to the family of 5, looked at the suit-clad gentlemen in the adjoining seat, and simply said “my baby needs to be changed about every 2 hours, fed every 3 hours, and may need occasional burping, rocking or other entertaining — then she promptly placed the 6 month old baby in the seat, fastened the seat belt, handed the man the bag of diapers, bottles, etc. and proceeded down 8 rows to the next scattered seat assigned to the family.
 
Well, before you could say “WOW” the man fired off his call attendant button and was talking quite loudly and excitedly about his shocking predicament.  Wouldn’t you know it — within minutes, the flight attendants got a total of 9 people to change seats so the family of 5 could sit together!
 
When was the last time you examined the rules you were being asked to play by in your business and simply said - I don’t think so - today I change the rules!
